The Sydney Biomedical Accelerator is a visionary $780 million facility reshaping the future of medical research and innovation in Australia. Located across 36,000 square metres on the University of Sydney’s Camperdown campus and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the Accelerator will unite researchers, clinicians, and industry partners in an integrated hub to fast-track the translation of scientific discoveries into real-world health outcomes.

The facility will include state-of-the-art laboratories, PC2 and PC3 laboratories and cleanrooms (Grade C and D), a biobank, advanced anatomy and medical training spaces, biomedical manufacturing and high-performance computing infrastructure — all designed to support cutting-edge research and education.

LCI’s Role:

LCI is proud to be delivering the mechanical and electrical building services design for this highly specialised environment. Working collaboratively with the University of Sydney, Sydney Local Health District, architects Denton Corker Marshall and HDR, as well as a multidisciplinary team of engineers and cost planners, our team has contributed expertise to ensure the facility meets its complex functional and operational requirements.

Our initial scope involved delivering electrical engineering services, including security and communications, together with mechanical engineering services, specialist laboratory gases, and cryogenic systems through to 70% tender design. Building on this foundation, LCI’s role has since expanded to include peer review services for the hydraulic and fire protection systems.

Key Lessons:

Throughout our involvement on the Sydney Biomedical Accelerator, LCI has identified key lessons to inform future complex laboratory projects:

  • Early User Engagement
    Engage User Groups early to define specific environmental, power, data, and water requirements for each department to avoid redesigns later.
  • Optimised HVAC and Exhaust Systems
    Provide dedicated AHUs for PC2 labs, consider sustainable design principles, and optimise air control strategies to balance energy use with lab safety requirements.
  • Plant and Equipment Planning
    Carefully plan plant and riser locations to minimise ductwork and disruption during future upgrades, including appropriate standby plant and backup systems (generators, UPS) for critical equipment.
  • Specialist Services Coordination
    Plan for specialist lab gases, cryogenics, and fume extraction requirements early, balancing safety, energy efficiency, and operational needs.
  • Fire and Compliance Strategy
    Coordinate early with the Fire Engineer to ensure PC2/PC3 lab integrity can be maintained during fire events, integrating this into the overall fire engineering strategy.
