Sydney Children's Hospital Stage 1 & Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre

The Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre project is a landmark healthcare development that marks a new era in paediatric care in Australia. Delivered as part of the NSW Government’s $1.5 billion investment in the Randwick Health & Innovation Precinct, this 12-storey facility brings together world-leading clinical care, research and education in a single, purpose-built environment.

In a national first, the centre integrates childhood cancer research with the clinical care of children undergoing treatment – accelerating the translation of research discoveries into improved clinical outcomes. The facility includes advanced PC2 laboratories, cleanroom suites, and the innovative PPVA isolation rooms, developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to protect immunocompromised patients and those undergoing chemotherapy.

LCI was engaged to provide mechanical and vertical transportation engineering services, along with acoustic design delivered by specialist subconsultant Pulse White Noise Acoustics. The project was a collaborative co-design process involving clinicians, researchers, patients, families, and community stakeholders. This inclusive approach ensured the facility would meet both current and future healthcare needs with compassion and precision.

Following the co-design phase, LCI progressed through design finalisation, construction administration, testing and commissioning, and will undertake post-occupancy evaluation. The engagement was delivered under a novation arrangement with principal contractor John Holland, in partnership with Health Infrastructure.

The facility connects seamlessly with UNSW’s Health Translation Hub, strengthening ties between the Randwick Hospitals Campus and UNSW Kensington Campus, and forming a dynamic ecosystem for innovation, learning and care.
